Why Support Us Addiction is a devastating illness that tears families and communities apart. Many Southern Albertans are witnessing first hand, a much higher rate of crime and mortality from all forms of addiction. This is putting a greater amount of strain on our civil, social, police and fire services. This social condition also plays a major role in overcrowded hospitals and institutions as well. Addiction affects us all in one way or another. While this present social condition seems somewhat hopeless, we at the Chinook Society for Recovering Addicts believe that there is hope for the future. It has been proven that in order for people suffering from addiction to become productive members of society again, they must meet with other like-minded people on a regular basis. This allows them to share their experience, strength and hope, so they may gain a better understanding of their personal problems and find positive solutions. It also allows them to create a social network through new friends, resources and associates that will help them in their personal journey. As a community, we can help. The Chinook Society makes these meetings possible by providing a fully serviced building to any self supporting, recovery based group. It is our mandate to ensure that no matter what the financial condition of these groups that they never be denied access to a facility. We have roughly 1000 people that come through our doors and attend these meetings every month. As you can imagine that has created a lot of wear and tear on our building. Our property has not seen the necessary interior and exterior upgrades for several years now and is in dire need of an extensive renovation both inside and out!
